Italian newspapers online

If you are in an intermediate level in your Italian language learning process, then you can benefit from reading Italian newspapers online. At the end of this post, we give you a list of Italian newspapers.

You can advance in your Italian reading skills while you are getting informed about what is happening in Italy and in the world.

To benefit from reading the news in Italian, we highly recommend you to have a background of the news you are reading. If you are familiarized with what you read in a foreign language then you will comprehend much more. You could start reading the news in English, and after you have been updated with what is happening around the globe, you then go on to read them in Italian.

Learn Italian while you read the news

Reading Italian news will also give you a background of the Italian culture. By frequently doing this you will be acquainted with the general context in the minds of the Italian people. It will be easier for you to start a conversation in an Italian circle. It will be easier to understand the Italian idiosyncrasy.

Woman reading newspaper

If you have an emotional bound with Italy, or with a specific region in Italy, you will be largely enriched and gratified by reading the daily news of that region.

You can also listen to the news in Italian. In occasions you do not have the time to sit down to read, but you can listen. If you want to discover some good Italian radio stations online, click here.

Newspapers use daily language

Languages are continually in evolution. Terms rise and fall in disuse. The newspapers are usually up to date with the language they use. So you can be sure that the terms you learn will be understood by the people walking down the street. Up to date language is not common colloquialism.

Common colloquialism will be more difficult to grab in a newspaper, but when you’re starting to become fluent with a language, it is better to have a relatively formal speech. It may save you from some embarrassing moments, LOL. 🙂

Reading is the previous step to writing. If you commit to reading in Italian daily, you will surely master writing later on.

  5. Hi! I think that is an amazing idea to read and listen to the news. I know sometimes on the language programs they only teach you the formal way of speaking and well, it just isn’t used in day to day talking to people.

I am glad you have given me this idea. Going to try it with my French lessons.

    Blessings,

    Lynda

    1. Hi Lynda! I’m glad you found this idea useful. You’re right, language learning programs can’t cover all we need. So, we complement our learning with ideas as this one.

  7. Thanks for sharing this nice article on learning Italian while reading news. This article is really informative and educative. I have a multilingual background so it has always been easier for me to incorporate new languages as an adult. And Italian is one of the languages I would love to learn. The list of newspapers is also very useful. I’m grateful you included newspapers from the South.

    1. Hi! Having a multilingual background is really nice. And it indeed helps you with new languages.

      All the best learning Italian.

  8. This is a great way to learn Italian! I took Italian in high school, but that was 3 decades ago. I also learned Russian in college and have known Spanish my entire life, due to my mom’s ancestry. But I never tried learning any of those languages by reading their newspapers. They were harder to get before the Internet explosion, of course. But that’s what makes it so cool that we can do that so easily now. Great post! Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. Hi Mark! Thank you very much for sharing your experience with languages. I can also speak Spanish. But have never studied Russian nor been in Russia.

Yes, learning a language with Internet has never been easier. There are many resources available.

  9. I feel like this article was written specially for me. My Italian has become very rusty and I keep telling myself that I need to do something about it. Reading Italian Newspapers online would be a perfect way to start making that effort. This is so exciting for me and I am so happy you are sharing my beloved Italia with the world. Newspaper reading is really a good way to learn to read and even write in Italian.

    1. Hi! Yes, reading helps us to write also.

Thank you very much for your very nice comment. I greatly appreciate it. I wish you quickly brush up your Italian and become fluent again. All the best!

  10. Dear Henry,

Thanks a lot for the informative and educational post.

I always wanted to be a polyglot and had a dream of becoming a linguist. I studied French and Hindi for a while and then got distracted and stopped (that’s the thing I need to work on, consistency). For the last 5+ months I have been studying Hebrew.

I would like to learn German, Italian and Chinese (and I have even written them in a list of things I want to accomplish).

Using the news to learn a language can be helpful. In fact, I have my own experience because I learnt English that way (English is not my first language). I had been surprised that I hadn’t read this type of recommendation so far, but now that I’m reading it here, I can freely say it works. It’s a great advice: reading in English first and then reading the equivalent news in Italian.

The list of Italian newspapers you shared is very helpful and I am also bookmarking your post for future reference.

    Much Success!

    Paul

    1. Hi Paul! Thanks for your comment. I’m so glad to hear this worked for you concerning English as it has for me too.

  11. I don’t read the newspaper. But it’s not because I don’t like it, it’s just that I haven’t created the habit. But a teacher suggested that I could start reading the newspaper in Italian. She explained that I already had a decent level in Italian and that it would help me to get exposed to new vocabulary. So I started to search and found your post. I’m surprised that you have almost explained the same things the teacher told me. And I appreciate very much the list of newspapers you included here.

    1. Hi Marshall! I’m glad you have reached an intermediate level in Italian. That’s good! Keep it up.

Reading the newspaper can help you very much as your teacher has explained. You can bookmark this post and everytime you have some spare time read a couple of news. I wish you the best as you continue learning Italian.

  12. Henry, I am glad people are still guiding others to read newspapers. It is uncommon and should be continued. Unfortunately, magazines and newspapers have gone out of business due to technology. However, regarding the language goes, you are so right. I learned many things by reading. When one reads, one memorized grammar and it is a great way to keep up with the latest news.

    1. Hello Linda. Reading is an important aspect of learning a language. Each one of us has different interests but we should all read. So hopefully, some find newspapers still appealing having the learning language goal in mind.

Thanks for stopping by and for your nice comment. All the best.

  13. That is a very smart idea to become fluent in reading Italian using online newspapers. The more we read, the better we write.

I especially like Barbarossa, as the home page is very colorful and draws you in. I enjoyed reading this article, and have bookmarked this post to continue checking the newspapers listed as the days go by.

    1. Hi Robert. Yes, I agree with you, reading helps us in many ways. I’m glad you bookmarked. I hope to continue hearing from you then. Keep well!

  14. What a clever way to get exposed to another language! Italian reading skills don’t come easy I would imagine. But reading the news would be one way to work on acquiring vocabulary for sure!

I mean immersion of culture in this way isn’t nearly as good as going there physically but it might just be a pretty close second!

    Thanks for sharing this!

  15. I think the concept of using Italian newspaper articles as a tool for improving language skills, is a brilliant idea! It’s a great way to not only enhance one’s understanding of the Italian language but also gain insights into how the language would be used in everyday life on a variety of topics. Thank you for the list of resources and suggestions.
